A Great Community effort
What a great turn-out and effort by the community – 38 volunteers joined the kina removal event on Friday 16th December! Scuba divers and free divers removed 1,286 kina (20 catch bags) from Kau Point. Kayakers paddled the kina to shore where volunteers swiftly transferred them into fish bins for counting. At the end of the event the kina were distributed to volunteers and some of the kina will be taken to Parihaka for a hui on 18 December.
Goal of the project is to reduce kina density to 0.5 kina per square metre to allow seaweed to regenerate. We will be monitoring the project area to measure progress. There is a lot more work to be done. Keep an eye out for the next removal and monitoring events coming up!
Thanks to all iwi, hapū and community members who joined as volunteers, to Wellington Underwater Club for marking the removal areas and preparing the site, and to Dive HQ for leading the in-water part of the day. To Ocean Hunter Wellington for donating three large kina sacks and to Deep Blue Seafoods for providing fish bins for the events.

Divers added another 1,045 kina to the removal tally on Sunday! The kina were well received at the Hongoeka marae.
