2,141 kina
The weather forecast and wet weather didn’t deter our volunteers. 11 divers and 3 shore volunteers removed 2,141 kina from Kau Point on Friday after work.
The divers worked in allocated sections along a 40m measure tape. The goal was to remove kina in a 5m wide area either side of the tape and bring the kina density to 0.5 kina per square metre. This should allow seaweed to start regenerating.
Mana whenua donated half of the kina to the funeral of a diver who passed away recently. The rest of the kina were distributed through Te Tatau o Te Pō marae.
Thanks to everyone who joined as volunteers, to Ocean Hunter Wellington for donating large kina sacks to the project, to Wellington Underwater Club for marking the removal area and to Dive HQ for leading the in-water part of the day.
There is still a lot more work to be done and we are already planning for the next removal event. If you want to find out more about the project read the FAQ section on the About us page. To get involved get in touch!
